I recently finished The Referral Engine by John Jantsch (another one of my paid-too-much-because-I'm-bored-at-the-airport decisions). Luckily, I wasn't disappointed and came away with a few pages of notes.
Reading it a second time will probably help me implement more of the strategies, but here are a few things that impressed me the first time around:
- Humans are wired to give referrals. LOVE THIS! Sometimes we hesitate to ask for referrals out of fear and concern that we will offend or make someone uncomfortable. Learn HOW to ask and then do it!
- Discover or create the remarkable thing about you. What sets you apart? It may something as simple as how approachable or likeable you are.
- Keep your marketing organized. You need a road map to insure that the necessary (marketing) things are getting done each day.
- Jantsch talked quite a bit about education-based marketing... which is a concept I firmly believe in. People want to know they are working with an expert and this is the easiest way to gain a reputation as an expert.
- Exceed expectations. Should be done in every part of your business.
- Tap into the power of a networking group. This especially resounded with me as I am considering beginning one soon.
If you are ready to grow your business with referrals, then I highly recommend this book to help you on that path. The Referral Engine has great advice and instruction.
